Willowdale Legal Aid Clinic
Only first-year students can apply to the clinic, as two first-year students from the 2019-2020 academic year continue as second-year students. The content of this website is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Accessing or using this website, including sending emails or filling out our web form, does not create an attorney-client relationship. The receipt of such communications does not establish a solicitor-client relationship. If we receive communications from you, we will contact you within two business days to discuss your situation and determine if and how we can best assist you. Legal services at our clinic are free of charge. Clients are usually asked to pay for costs associated with their case (e.g., medical reports and court fees). For these reasons, students will complete their training and begin their work remotely at the clinic. If certain physical distancing and other safety measures are taken, students may return to work in person at the clinic in close collaboration and consultation with clinic and PBSC staff and subject to the student`s willingness and ability. We offer accessible and non-discriminatory legal services.
Let us know if you need accommodation to facilitate your visit. We will also do our best to address the safety needs of survivors of domestic violence. In coordination between the student and the organization, in the event of the lifting of physical distancing measures, the personal reception and support of clients at the clinic can resume. However, students will understand that this is by no means guaranteed and is subject to the needs and capabilities of the organization as well as the respective guidelines of public health and the university/faculty. Depending on when physical distancing measures are lifted, students will not necessarily be required to reside in Toronto at the start of the project. Willowdale is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides legal services to low-income populations in a geographic area that includes parts of North York. Our services include legal representation, consulting, legal education and public relations in legal areas such as housing, immigration and refugees, ODSP/Ontario Works and others. 245 Fairview Mall Drive, Suite 106 Toronto, M2J4T1 Itinerary We`re sorry, but we couldn`t provide directions to these places.
First year: Two (2) students (subject to COVID-19 capacity guidelines below) will work as a couple and conduct supervised public legal education and awareness (PSE) seminars on immigration-related topics. Students may also be asked to research files or participate in client interviews. If you require a service in a language other than English, please let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange an interpreter. The community served by Willowdale includes many people who speak Farsi, Arabic, Cantonese and/or Mandarin. Knowledge of one of these languages is considered an advantage. Second year: Two (2) students (from the first year) provide research support and/or other file work (i.e. assistance in completing forms/documents) under the strict supervision of lawyers. If a student acts as a conduit for the lawyer by meeting with a client to provide information specific to the client`s case, all responses will be written by the lawyer who will be on site. If issues requiring follow-up are raised, they will be referred to the supervising lawyer.
Students also have the opportunity to accompany a lawyer representing a client before an administrative court.
