What Are the Ethical and Legal Use of Media and Information

in Uncategorized

How someone becomes aware of someone else`s information on social media is an important ethical question. It`s one thing to post information on social media from someone who has explicitly granted access to it. However, it is another thing to access this information if it is presented by a third party, such as a classmate, colleague or competitor for an award, honor or job. Philosophically, many believe that information freely and voluntarily made available to the public, regardless of how it is exposed, can be verified. Others believe that only information to which specific access has been made can be evaluated and interpreted. The ethical question for faculty and administrators is: “If a student is actively trying to keep their online persona deprived of authority, should this information be used if it is provided by someone else who has access to it?” The judge emphasized that, as part of the orientation discussion for the student teaching course, Ms. Snyder had been ordered not to post any information about her students or the supervising teacher on her personal website. Nevertheless, she maintained a MySpace website, where she later posted the following. It is important and mandatory to note that this discussion is for educational purposes only and is not intended to constitute legal advice. Media ethics: issues of moral principles and values applied to the conduct, roles and content of the media, in particular the ethics and standards of journalism and the ethics of marketing; Also the field of study that deals with this topic. With regard to reporting, it covers issues such as impartiality, objectivity, balance, prejudice, privacy and the public interest. In general, this also includes stereotypes, taste and decency, obscenity, freedom of expression, advertising practices such as product placement, and legal issues such as defamation. At the institutional level, it includes debates on media ownership and control, commercialization, accountability, the relationship of the media with the political system, issues arising from regulation (e.g.

censorship) and deregulation. A number of cases involving issues related to the use of social media have been raised, some by higher education institutions and others by secondary schools, have been brought to court. A review of the approaches taken by the courts to deal with these cases can help institutional administrators and faculty members address future issues in a legally informed manner, thereby increasing the chances of making a decision that stands up to judicial review. In such legal matters, it is important to work in close coordination with institutional legal advisers. Media ethics promote and defend values such as universal respect for life as well as the rule of law and the rule of law. [1] Media ethics defines and addresses ethical issues of how the media should use citizens` texts and images. The last 2 decades in particular have been marked by exponential technological advances, especially personal access to increasingly sophisticated electronic devices for information retrieval and communication. The accompanying changes in cultural mores regarding the use of such devices have widened the gap between generations and affect all institutions, including law and education.3 The heart of social media ethical dilemmas is that social media was designed for social communication, which is traditionally considered a private and protected space for most adults. However, the inherent nature of social media makes this communication accessible to a wider audience. Once the information becomes public, how it is used is no longer under the control of the moderator.

This fundamental dilemma is at the heart of the ethical debate, from which several other ethical questions develop. These ethical issues can be categorized according to 5 main criteria: (1) who consults social media information; (2) how social media information is accessed; (3) for what purposes is the social information used; (4) What criteria are used to make judgments about information on social media; and (5) what is the nature of “relationships” on social media. To give the reader a concise understanding of ethical issues, the following sections provide a brief summary of these issues, including some of the key questions posed by pharmacy and other educators. Topics of entertainment media ethics include: There are new ethical issues due to new image technology. Citizens now have the opportunity to take photos and videos in an easier and faster way, such as smartphones, which allow them not only to collect information, but also to edit and manipulate it. [10] Digital news media include online journalism, blogging, digital photojournalism, citizen journalism and social media. [9] This is about how journalism should interact and use “new media” to publish stories, including the use of text and images provided by others. Literature on how the internet specifically influences media ethics in online journalism is scarce, complicating the idea of a universal code of media ethics. [2] Such issues can arise when institutional officials attempt to gain access to a student`s social media communications or devices used for such exchanges. Research and publications in the field of information ethics have been produced since the 1980s. [3] Notable figures include Robert Hauptman (who focused his work specifically on censorship, privacy, access to information, balance in collection development, copyright, fair dealing, and codes of ethics), Rafael Capurro, Barbara J. Kostrewski, and Charles Oppenheim (who wrote the article “Ethics in Information Science”).

Discussion of issues such as confidentiality of information, distortion of information provided to customers or consumers, quality of data provided by online providers, etc.). [3] New social media can create a variety of potential legal entanglements for those who choose to use technology. A brief description of some of the issues is presented here only to make the reader aware of this potential, and not to discuss all facets of the potential challenges exhaustively or even completely. It is best to discuss these issues with an institutional advisor in the context of special circumstances. The school district appealed to the U.S. Regional Court of Appeals, where a 3-judge panel ruled against the educators, upholding the lower court`s decision that the student`s First Amendment rights had been violated.14 In light of the apparent contrary decisions in this case and the decision immediately discussed below, on April 9, 2010, the U.S. Court of Appeals granted a hearing on the matter before the Plenum.15 The use of social media information to consider admission and hiring decisions is a frequent topic of discussion. Arguably, this information may be more revealing than what can be found in transcripts, applications and interviews. Perhaps this information could lead admissions committees to make better decisions about applicants who submit grades or similar grades based on the criteria listed above. Questions that counter this perspective include: “Is it fair to judge some individuals` information if other people`s information is not accessible due to confidentiality features?” and “Is it ethical to use this information unless specified in the eligibility or employment criteria?” Some address this issue, citing that the way one presents oneself publicly in an online environment is an indicator of judgment and attention to detail. People who are not careful about the information they provide online, or who are not careful enough to protect access to it, may not have the appropriate skills or judgment to work in a professional environment.

The media has manipulated the way officials behave through the advancement of technology. The permanent television coverage shows the legislative process; Unjust decisions are exposed throughout the government process more quickly than ever before. The search for truth is crucial in media ethics, as any resistance to the search for truth is considered a deception. Everything shown by the media, whether printed or video, is considered original. When a statement is written in an article or a video is shown by a public servant, these are the original “truthful” words of the official himself. If college officials take steps to monitor social networking sites to ensure students adhere to codes of conduct or act in accordance with the college`s or school`s mission, they could create a “duty of care” to students. Legally, this increases the college`s or school`s responsibility to prevent harm and increases the likelihood of prosecution.28 In most cases, this duty stems from the actions of an individual or colleagues in an institution, i.e., the law expects conduct to be consistent with that of other knowledgeable and active individuals.
